Quizá sea Vértigo el film más fascinante de Alfred Hitchcock. Fascinante, por la seducción de las imágenes que relatan la historia de una fascinación. Y, puesto que de ello se trata, su eje vertebrador será, como tantas y tantas veces en el perverso puritano, el ojo. Frontera entre el vacío que constituye al sujeto y el exterior hacia el cual se proyecta, el ojo es en Hitchcock una especie de «No trespassing» tras el cual es peligroso indagar, pero continuamente vulnerado. Por ello, es al ojo inyectado en sangre adonde se dirige la cámara mientras suena el tema «nacimiento» al comienzo del film y es de su interior de donde surgen dos rótulos -Vértigo y Alfred Hitchcock-. This article deals with two perplexing questions that arise from the viewing of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (John Ford, 1962): the use of flashback and the presence of nostalgia, an emotion foreign to epic poetry. 7he first points to the existence of a mythical past estranged from the present,from which civilization arises and which is symbolized by the train which makes its appearance at the beginning and the end of the film. Nostalgia introduces a painful note in the present-day characters which may be defined both as old-age in a physical sense and the fact that they belong to another, legendary world.
